Member of the genus Hypericum with over 400 species worldwide. From the family Hypericacaeae. Native to Europe, West Asia, North Africa, Madeira and the Azores. Naturalized in North America and in Australia.  Especially prevalent in Northern California and Southern Oregon. St.John’s Wort has been studied to supply a balanced or increased mood and has also been said to aid in wound healing. It has been linked and strongly used in depression studies to note the positive effects.

Today, St. John’s Wort may be used to:

  • Elevate Mood
  • Can be effective in treating wounds, bruises, burns, and sores
  • May lessen the presence of depression symptoms
  • Strong antiviral activity
  • Increase the levels of chemical messengers in the brain, such as serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline
